Tensides

Tensides or surfactants - are amphipathic compounds with both lipophilic (hydrophobic; non-polar) and hydrophilic (polar) sites within one molecule that modifies interfacial tension of water.

Tensides plays important role as cleaning, wetting, dispersing, emulsifying, foaming and anti-foaming agents in many practical applications and products, for instance in industry, agriculture, cosmetics and other uses.

Tensides are also widely used in biochemistry, cell biology or molecular biology. Cell lysis, protein solubilization, protein crystallization or reduction of background staining in blotting experiments are just a few examples.
